In a significant step towards social inclusion, a new differently-abled friendly 'Pakal Veedu' (Day Care Home) was dedicated to the public at Kavalamukkatta, Pookkottumpadam. Constructed under the leadership of the Thiruvananthapuram-based Different Art Centre, the facility aims to provide care and support for the differently-abled and the elderly.
The inaugural ceremony was marked by the lighting of the traditional lamp by a distinguished gathering including Abdul Wahab MP, lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, percussion maestro Mattannur Sankarankutty, football legend I.M. Vijayan, Devaki Amma, and Magician Gopinath Muthukad.
This initiative serves as a continuation of the Different Art Centre’s 'Magic Home' housing project, which aims to construct homes across all districts in the state. For this specific project, the facility was built for the Vishwaprabha Library. During the event, Gopinath Muthukad and Shyla Thomas officially handed over the keys to Raman, the Founder Executive Member of the library.
Furthermore, the cultural and sports training activities at the center were formally launched by Mattannur Sankarankutty and I.M. Vijayan, setting a vibrant tone for the center's future operations.
A poignant moment of the ceremony was the recognition of Chemminikkara Vasudevan, a local resident who generously provided three cents of land free of cost for the construction of the building.
In appreciation of this noble gesture, Abdul Wahab MP honored him by draping a traditional 'Ponnada' (golden shawl). The two-story structure is well-equipped with two spacious halls, a kitchen, and differently-abled friendly restrooms, ensuring a comfortable environment for its occupants.
The primary objective of the Pakal Veedu is to offer a space where the elderly and differently-abled can spend their days productively while strengthening their community bonds through social inclusion. The event was attended by several notable figures, including WHO Indian National Professional Officer Dr. Mohammed Asheel, Malappuram District Library Council President C. Jayaprakash, Different Art Centre Director Shyla Thomas, Vishwaprabha Library Joint Secretary Sreenivasan, National Award winner Fathima Anshi, and Assistant Professor Arya Prakash from Koyilandy Shankar Memorial Arts and Science College.
